Smart Home Repair & Replacement in Metro Detroit

Love your home. Frustrated with the technology?

A system installed by someone else is a starting point, not a dead end. ITD helps Metro Detroit homeowners understand what they have, put everyday problems in perspective, and choose what is worth repairing, upgrading or replacing.

Start with the frustration. Find the cause.

A remote that needs a second try. Rooms that disappear from the audio app. Wi-Fi that cannot reach the places you actually use it. A newly purchased home full of touchscreens, but no useful explanation. These symptoms deserve a diagnosis before a shopping list.

We look at the network, equipment condition, connections and intended control behavior together. An unreliable network or an unfinished installation can look like a platform problem. Replacing the main controller alone may not address the cause.

    • Broken or inconsistent controls and scenes
    • Unreliable networking, streaming or room audio
    • Aging equipment and changing device compatibility
    • Missing documentation or an installer relationship that no longer works
    • Service costs that have become a burden, or support you cannot rely on

    Control4 troubleshooting & programming.

For existing Control4 homes, ITD can assess programming, device drivers, room assignments and everyday routines. We review the functions you depend on: selecting a source, adjusting lights, using a remote and moving between rooms. Programming cleanup should make those tasks understandable, not simply add more buttons.

Hardware, software and driver versions need to work together. Before an upgrade, we check controller capability, connected equipment and integration requirements. Some problems can be corrected within the current system; others call for targeted hardware changes. We discuss those boundaries before making changes.

Taking over a system installed by someone else.

You do not need to be the original owner or have purchased your system from ITD. A takeover begins by establishing what equipment is present, what is accessible and which accounts or permissions are needed. An inherited system may include working components worth keeping alongside devices whose history is unclear.

Gather any equipment list, network diagram, previous proposals and available system documentation. We will explain what access is needed through appropriate channels. Never send passwords, security codes or account credentials through the public inquiry form.

    04

    Repair, selectively upgrade—or replace.

Repair makes sense when the existing system still fits the home and the fault can be isolated. A retrofit or selective upgrade may refresh a controller, network or room interface while preserving compatible equipment. Replacement deserves a closer look when the daily experience, service model or equipment lifecycle no longer meets your needs.

Control4 and Lutron RadioRA 3 are capabilities ITD offers, not a compulsory bundle. Some homes need whole-home coordination. Others need independent lighting controls or better networking. We recommend the scope that fits the home rather than assuming every room should be automated.

    05

Understand the cost of owning it.

Assessment and project costs depend on system size, documentation, fault-finding time, compatibility and the amount of change proposed. There is no useful universal replacement price. Discuss assessment scope and fees before authorizing work, then compare what is retained, what changes and the proposed installation work.

Ask about manufacturer feature subscriptions, remote-access requirements, software licensing and professional service as well as equipment. Policies vary by system and generation. One-off work and optional ongoing support are different decisions; neither means that every future cost disappears.

    The way forward

    Clarity before change.

    1. 01

      Assess

Review symptoms, equipment, access and the household routines that matter most.

    2. 02

      Recommend

Compare repair, selective upgrades and replacement, with compatibility and cost considerations.

    3. 03

      Carry out the agreed work

Plan access and disruption, then repair or change the agreed parts of the system.

    4. 04

      Test & hand over

Walk through daily tasks, explain controls and discuss documentation and optional future care.

    Good questions

    Before you
    decide.

Thoughtful work starts with realistic expectations.

Can you help with a system another company installed?

Yes. ITD assesses existing systems, including Control4 service takeovers. Scope depends on equipment, permissions and available documentation. For other platforms, our replacement assessment does not imply authorized source-brand programming or repair.

We inherited a smart home. Do we need to know the system?

No. Choose Not sure on the inquiry form and describe the controls or equipment you recognize. Do not send credentials. Available equipment lists and prior documentation can be reviewed through an appropriate channel.

Will you tell us if repair is a better fit than replacement?

The assessment compares the fault, remaining equipment life, desired functions and cost of ownership. A full replacement is not the default. Selective upgrades can be a practical middle ground when compatibility allows.

Does a retrofit mean opening walls?

Not necessarily, but wiring reuse cannot be guaranteed. Cable condition, topology, electrical requirements and the proposed equipment determine whether wiring or building work is needed.

Can you upgrade an older Control4 controller or operating system?

We assess controller capability, device drivers, software compatibility and desired functions before recommending an upgrade. Not every older device or integration carries forward unchanged.

    Is ongoing support required?

A one-off repair or project and an ongoing support arrangement are separate scopes to discuss. Manufacturer subscriptions or feature charges may still apply; we explain the proposed system’s actual requirements rather than promising no future fees.
